Aamir,

Thank you for your kind offer, which I will take up.

The pictures will be emailed towards the end of this month, after I have done the fishing trip and can download them onto my relatives'
Computer.
Regards

Vancouver

Out of all the North American cities, I feel that the above city is the one
That will appeal the most to the Indian Angler.

Upon landing at the airport, you are greeted at the immigration desk by
An Indian face that looks oddly familiar. You collect your luggage and then
A strong Punjabi taxi driver lifts your luggage easily into the taxi and puts you at ease
By putting on the latest Hindi songs on one of the 3 all day /night Indian channels,
While driving you to your destination.
There is no dearth of Indian restaurants serving hot tandoori food or any
Vegetarian food that one may need. The pedestrian walks are full of people
From the subcontinent and cruise ships going and coming from Alaska
Disgorge loads of Indian tourists.

However, it is the fishing that will appeal to you.

It is estimated thar several MILLION salmon enter the river systems around
Vancouver come spawning time, meaning that you can have excellent fishing.

Furthermore, Vancouver seems to be better organized for the angler compared to other Canadian cities
With a myriad number of fishing guides offering their services, and
Special lodges to cater for the angler exclusively whether he wishes to fly fish,
Spin or do bait fishing .

You can fish from the beach, in a river or a lake, either on foot or by boat
or fly in a floatplane that will take you to remote lakes for several trout species.Apart from that, you can go out on the ocean and troll for
Ocean going species or bottom fish under the expert guidance of
Qualified guide cum skipper.

If you are so inclined, a helicopter will pick you up straight from the lodge
and fly you to secret locations to fulfill your angling desires, and land on a glacier overlooking a deep valley where they will serve you a picnic lunch
With all the Trimmings.

The prices are stiff but still reasonable compared to other places.

Thank you all for the good wishes.

Checked into the lodge, what a fantastic setting .A river runs through it
(Fraser River) and just beyond it a majestic snow covered range of mountains..sort of reminds me of the Sutlej running through the
Shivaliks but on a grander scale.

Early (5:30am) start to catch pink and sockeye salmon.

Dinner was wild duck with hazelnuts, followed by pork tenderloin with vegetables and ended with a chocolate souffle (delicious as per the
wife) washed down with a Canadian Pinot Noir (acceptable).

After that, we had to try on the chest waders as tomorrow wild and wet weather is expected...irritating to find the right sizes but it had to be done.

Better get some sleep....good night everyone.

Helli Kingfish,
looks like you're about to get a taste of all the fun I have every year just about 1500 miles north of Vancouver.
I do worry about the bait fishing for Sturgeon - catch one and you'll be the one hooked.
Never tried the Frasier but the Columbia did it for me.
So long - enjoy the trip and get a big one.

Ken,

Hmmmm....the more I look at the sturgeon scene, the less I like it!

The Lodge record chart shows that the largest sturgeon caught by
One of their guests was 11 ft. Long and weighed 800 lbs and the 2011
Record is 9 ft.4 in. Weighing in at 500 lbs.

There is no way that I can hold any fish of tonnages even one tenth
Of the above for too long but it should be fun and I can always claim that I have fished for sturgeon!

With regard to licensing Fees, as the lodge debited these directly to my account, I do not have the specific figures in front of me but the salmon tag
(which entitles you to keep salmon for the table) is around C$30 or so.

The BC Fisheries do maintain a comprehensive website and you should
Check their latest fees and regulations whilst planning a trip.

For example, the sockeye season was closed yesterday giving us just one day in which to catch these superb tasting species.
Regards,
Kingfish

I will post a more detailed report a bit later...the fishing schedule is murderous (had to be up at 4am yesterday to get ready for the 6am
Tee off, non stop fishing thereafter and despite a scheduled return to the lodge of 2pm most anglers are having problems getting enough rest
Due to jet lag...it is nearly 2:30am and my sleep pattern is all over the place.

Just something to bear in mind when you travel to these parts.

Hello Kingfish,
you got your first lesson in "Humpy snagging" as we call it. Pink/ Humpback Salmon do not feed in fresh water anymore therefore you can't realy call it catching. The art of hitting the fish legal ( one inch around the mouth ) depends on your rig/ the weight and length of the leader. If you hook them on the belly use a longer leader and reduce the weight of your hook/fly. If you get them on the back or tail fin go shorter and heavier. A little split shot comes handy for those adjustments.
I personally never fish intentionally for Pinks since the quality of meat is not what I look forward to. It's very soft if not to say spongy. Pink is an excellent choice for hot smoking as well as canning due to his relatively high fat content. You have to get them right after they migrate into the fresh water. Still it is missing the good salmon flavor found in Silver/Coho or Red/Sockeye Salmon. King/Chinnok Salomon is similar to Pink in flavor and fat content allthough a little firmer. King Salmon is more or less off limits for me. I catch one per year on the 14 weight flyrod and release it imediately. This species is suffering ever decreasing numbers due to the fact that these King Salmon are a common bycatch of comercial Net-fisherys. All measures taken in the rivers such as closures and size limitations have shown no improvement because the damage to the population is done in the saltwaters. I better stop talking politics since this is a sore subject with me. One more thing I have to mention so you see the dimensions of "accidently" cought salmon. In the season 2009 over 11 Million pounds - that's 11 with 000000 zeros were bycatch of comercial gill and drag netters and had to be discarded. Yes - discarded - you heard right.

I wish you further luck fishing on the pacific northwest. It's heaven on earth. I can't wait to hear your report if you hook into a sturgoen. It will certenly be a moment to remeber for lifetime.

Tight lines - Alaskafan

Report no.4-day 2

What a change to one's fortunes.

My wife, who has never caught anything larger than a 8lb fish in her life and was scared to fish for larger species ,decided to show who was boss and
Landed a 17lb king salmon whilst bottom bouncing.

Considering that she is all of 5ft4in and has weak wrists, to land this fish in a river with a strong current is no mean feat.

Just after this, we headed upriver to the sturgeon grounds(we had a native
Indian guide with us) where it was my turn to step into the ring.

The bait for the sturgeon was the roe stripped from the pink salmon
Females caught earlier, which is put into nylon ladies stockings and a ladoo made out it, which was then hooked through with a 9/0 sized hook.

The rod was a sturdy fiberglass mated to a shimano TLD reel loaded with
150 LB braided line.

I was just into my second bite of my sandwich when the rod buckled and it was my turn to join battle with the fish.

What happened next is surreal, I never thought I could handle a large fish
Of this strength at my age. However, I was not going to give up an opportunity of a lifetime that easily.

It was a good fight that lasted 20 minutes and the sturgeon was then
Landed at the river bank.

The guide estimated it to be 6-7ft and weighing 150-180 lbs, good enough for it to be the largest fish that I have ever caught.

Needless to say, it was released.

Tomorrow is a change of scene and we go on a wilderness trip for coho
Salmon and bull trout(Dolly Varden) with a strong chance of seeing bear.

Kingfish

Fantastic. Well done. Did you get a leap or did the fish stay down ?
We want the blow by blow account.

The Dolly Varden should be an experience. Not huge but the colours are stunning. Have yourself a good day.
