Hi Ali,
Thanks a ton. We [me Dipu & Sartaj] started from Jalandhar in the afternoon, so that we could try the evening session. We went to a place near Kiratpur sahib in Ropar . Its a fast flowing tributery of Sutluj. After settling down on opposite banks, we were casting with different tackles. I was using a Quantum rod, as the current is really strong here, along with 8000 Shimano and a 20 POUND GREEN BRAID, since the water is emerald green here now. I tried small lures earliar, but then shifted to larger surface poppers. After 3rd or 4th cast, i let it drift in the fast current to about 150 to 200 meters, and then reeled in diagonally across the current. Baam..... It took the popper and tried to make a beeline to the rapids. It fought like a true Lion of the Water; and in the process got badly mutilated too. We 3 had to make a joint effort to land it on the ground. It was a beauty; i wanted to release it, but its condition was bad ,as the lure had torn its mouth as well the gills . It weighed 8 kgs.

What are the dates for mahseer season? I thought Mahseer season is only in the months having "R" in months name so if we go by that then season should start in september.
Looks like I was wrong all this time

Harry Bhai sahib,

Dil noo khush karta!

I used to pass the same areas near Kiratpur years ago and always wondered what the fishing would be like there. You have answered my question handsomely.

It may be duplication but please ask some local mistri to file off the barbs on your hooks - this will enable a cleaner release of the mahseer.

Your tactic of letting the popper gather distance with the help of the current is good and certainly innovative - may I request info. on the poppers used?

Good luck on future forays !

Kingfish

Thanks guys. The popper was a Berkely. And yes, will try to undo the barbs; but this time the problem arose because it fought very very furiously. Even after landing, it kept on flapping , jerking rather too vigoursly. And , yes after 3 days, Dipu, my friend caught 2 more of 2 kgs and 5 kgs each!!!!

Hi Ghuman sahib, Mahasheer is not a herbivorous fish, so it attacks everything in its habitat. So it depends where are you going to fish? We, use different lures at different locations. In deep lakes, divers for deep water ; spinners too for shore casting [ fox, aquila ,are good] Surface poppers too for places there are stone crates/ or water is not too deep or if the fish is feeding near the surface. Try rapala/ Yo zuari etc etc brands. Try Bassspro shops for a wide variety. And yes, maj Dhingra is better now. We went fishing together 10 days back.

On reading this post I cringed from the fear of accidentally killing a Mahseer. Conservation is one thing obsession is quite another.

One Mahseer killed will make little difference if most are released safely. Our weakness still lies in not being able to change/effect policy matters which will improve fish stocks and revive some interest in angling and increase the number of anglers.

hi Ghuman, I am not an expert, but, get your self some assorted lures in floating & Shallow Divers (No need to go in deep divers untill fishiong damns / large confluences ) 6 cm, 9 cms & 14 cms in Rainbow trout, brown trout, Silver shad, Silver, Pike, & some jointed Fire & Hot tigers ( for pools, or darker waters like near rock features on rivers like Ganga, Alaknanda, Ramganga & Beas. Darker the water brighter the plug & visa versa,

I have caught some large Mahaseer 20 lbs+ on berkley Sof shads, Infact if u plan to spin in canals or fast river in UK, HP & PB, get some Acme Spoons in Silver & Gold as well.

Get ur self some mono leaders toov( no dark leaders for spinning), also to my experience Monofilament from 15 -25 lbs is what you would need to fish rivers, I am not against but braid may disappoint you in rivers.
you need a Medium - meduim heavy action rod B/w - 7.6 - 9 ft.

This just what i know of my lil fishing expereince.

Cheers!!!
