Bobby and Santosh,

If the jewfish is a Gol, then it can reach very large sizes.I have personally
Caught one that is 21 kgs.....it is very good eating and a keenly sought after fish here.

The reason I am asking about this fish is because someone said that these
Jewfish/mulloway/gol are found where the Hoogly becomes estuarine.

Been trying to verify this since a long time...can someone in Kolkata
Shed more light on this matter?

Merwyn,

Hard to tell from the photos if it is a jewfish.

I may at some stage post a picture of the one I caught and perhaps that will help everyone identify the fish more accurately.

Thanks.

Hi Santosh and Kingfish,

From the picture where Merv is holding the fish it is hard to tell, but even I am inclined to believe it is a small Jewfish, from the colour (in the picture) and the bait it took.

I was going by what Merv thought it to be, Dhoma will have that purple hew when just caught, so may be if Merv can remember then we will have a better idea.

Fred has made a good point.

Bobby

Hi Merv,

I deleted your post with the large pictures because Sayed has been kind enough resized and repost them.

Merv,

From the picture and the shape of the curvature of the line along the flank
(pressure sensor) and eyes, it resembles what is called a "soapy" jewfish
In these parts.

So called because these are small schooling jewfish whose flesh is very
Soft and mushy and are not considered good eating....that may not be the case if
Prepared in masala in India!

Hi Omesh. You can get Reichad masala in Crawford market in Mumbai or stores that sell Goan delicacies in Mumbai/Pune. Some brands are 'Goana Foods', 'Clara's', 'Karma's, 'Chandlekar's'...to name a few.

Or you can ask MerwynTiger to courier it to you.

I'm looking in pune and might find it, in case I don't, then will request you my friend.....

I looked on the internet, and asked a few friends, found Recipe for Rechad Masala

Red chillies (kashmiri) - 200 gms
garlic - 1 full
ginger - 100 gms
gloves - 10
pepper - 10
cinnamon - 5 sticks
cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
onion - 1 full
sugar - 1 table spoon
salt - 1 tea spoon
tamrind - as required

Grind all the ingredients together with vinegar only till it is fine.

the only query is in the end of the recipe it mentions grind with vinegar till its fine! how fine is fine? and in case a larger quantity is made! how long can it be preserved.

just tell me when man! keep some local arrack along with the fish with rechard masala for me, by the way speaking of rechard masala, I made it finally today and have got some banana leaves with my favorite local Indian fish Bangda, I know we can argue for better species for the table but the oils coming from the bangda are proven to be the best! so gonna eat some tomorrow..... bake it! so hoping it tastes good, definitely smells nice and pungent! Tell me when the jack fiesta happening! I'll come for the eating and drinking what I love going to Goa for anyway.... Congrats on the catch Mervyn, happy fishing and healthy eating!

Regards,
