Seniors fishing in that area will be able to point out the right gear, but my guess will be line 30 lbs, medium or medium heavy rod, spoons, spinners...not sure about the lures tho...maybe casting with lures will work...check with Sam, IG, Vikram or Ken...

Cant help you with the stay, but while you are on the water fish the colfluences, the head and tail of pools, eddies behind rocks and remember, if your line isn't in the water, you ain't going to get a fish !!

You should have 20-30 pound mono or braid ( if braid, then make sure you have about 4-6ft of mono leader. You should have at least 250-300 yds of line and be ready to stop the fish from getting into the rapids. Spoons, spinners and jointed lures, tend to work well, you could also try shallow diving lures ( 3-4ft) where the water permits.

All the best. And also you are going at the right time, when the Mahseer are moving upstream to go to spawn and on the look out for high energy protein bars to stock for the travel and reproduction.

Let us know how the trip went

Wish you all the best. I have been wanting to go there and spend 7 days in peace by the river since before my angling days.... Hopefully I should do that soon.

I too am planning a trip about the same time. Any info on the place to get the license from ?

I believe that we have tell the officer that we are here for "ANGLING" and not for "FISHING" ??? !!! :?

I plan to use Abu Garcia reel Soron STX 60 with about 17 lb mono (200 yards) with Rapala jointed minnow.

Hi Friends….
Sorry for the delay in posting as I got a little too busy with work.
Anyways It was a great break from the hot Delhi sun and a crazy office routine.
It was an early start on Monday morning so the truck was loaded the night b4, kiddy stuff took most of the space as my Daughter was all packed for the beach. Then there was a big Ice box with 2X24 pints of Budweisers and a big bag with all my tackle boxes.
Me and by Brother-in-law (Keshav) in the front and our wives ( both sisters at the back with my Daughter). We started from my place near India Gate at 5:00 am. The road was clear and good. Stopped at a Dhabha on the way as we over shot Cheetal Grand. (now the new Bypass is functional)
11:00 am we were at Rishikesh, the road between Muzafarnagar and Rurkee is not the greatest and did take a little longer than we had thought. Now the Forest Office at Rishikesh is @ Muni Ki Reti, there is a left turn going up from the Police post on the main road. It took me Half an hour to locate Deevanji at the office. By 1200 I had the permits. (Rs 500 + 10 / rod / day)
Now was the climb to Kaudiyala 48km ahead. Roughly took an hour as I was more keen on looking at the Ganga flowing on my right just along the road. Once at the rest house got settled. Had some freshly cooked Dal, Sabzi and Rotis.
Just a little talking with the Staff there and was Introduced the experienced angler working at the guest house. (V.S. Pundhir)
From the small garden between the cottage and the river I could see a few nice beaches along the river. The entire gang with Pundhir left for a beautiful looking beach some distance away, It was a climb down more than 250 steps on a funny staircase after parking the truck at a temple about 2km ahead of the guest house.
After setting up the toys for my daughter I got the rods ready, Tried all the different reels and lures/spinners/minnows but nothing happened. Thank god for the wives were busy clicking pictures of the breathtaking surroundings. 3 hours of no action from under the water we got Pundhir to get aatta+Haldi. It worked to some extent like a few bytes but nothing really happened. The water too started to get muddy and within a few minutes the water color changed to what a cup of tea with less milk looks like and then to Hot chocolate milk and then it was more like expresso coffee.
Then came a huge storm and within a few seconds the sky turned Black and it started to get dark at 5:00pm, A gush of wind, so strong that it took our hats and caps into the water. We were forced to packup and head back to the Guest house. It was a night when Keshav n I Drank till (we can’t remember the time). I guess we were there at the wrong time of the year. (Pundhir too kept saying the same but we did not want to believe him that afternoon).
Next day morning from the window of my room first thing I checked was the color of the water. But again we were desperate and wanted to be back on the river. Had a light breakfast and set out to DevPrayag (34km) The two rivers Mandakni with pure green water and the Alakhnanda with real muddy stuff got together, It indeed looked beautiful but rains high up in the mountains and some cloud bursts in rudraprayag ruined it for the anglers. Anyhow Lunch at Neemrana’s Glass House was good and post that we were at the river. It was raining and we just wanted to be there, We knew that it was too muddy to catch anything but we just wanted to do what we went for. Till late in the evening we kept casting and by now had lost a lotta hooks, swivels, minnows, lures and had a lot of line that was damaged due to the rocks under water.
That was the end of action and back to the guest house for a quite dinner after a few good drinks. Next morning 10:00am start back for delhi. A dip @ haridwar and some lunch there, Some Mango shopping on the way back and we were home by 6:30pm.
Still looking for a Big catch… and have already bought a week’s trip to GOA in September.
And yes No action means I could not even increase the size on Photoshop…
Cheers

Be very happy that you were able to spend some quality time beside the water.

The fishing at the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakni is well described in the Jim Corbetts epic "Man Eating Leopard of Rudryaparag" under the chapter "Fishing Interlude".

It is my dream to fish from there. :P

it is never easy to land Northern Mahseer unless the conditions are perfect.

Lovely Report, by the way..

Carry on regardless.

Regards,

Ali. :D

Looks you all had a great time. In june there is always the risk of early rains. Try the same area in Oct this year.

Look forward to seeing more of your posts!
