Here I go with my first post …
Post a couple of months of training and a number of trips to usual haunts in Mumbai with my friend and angling coach sanjay (sanju_freeworld) who helped me acquire gear and teach me patiently everything from scratch. We decided it was time we took a serious trip to a potential location, now that I was also pretty comfortable using the newly acquired gear.
So we set off … sanjay to get his elusive biggie and me, my first fish with a rod and reel. Destination konkan, a place which I love like no other … I have traveled the west coast quite a bit as a resident and a roadie. Equipped with whatever knowledge I had from my numerous trips (non angling) to konkan, information from the IA forum and of course google earth etc we set out on the holi weekend.
Reached very late in the night, the entire village was asleep. After managing to wake up the resort owner got into the room and slept for a couple of hours. First thing in the morning was a breakfast and we set off to reccee the entire location for spots. Spots identified we settled down at a local watering hole for some chilled beers and good local food and came back to the resort to prepare the gear and do some beach fishing in the evening.
(identifying spots and admiring the landscape)
First session we did surf fishing with small squid as bait. Sanjay got two catfish and I opened my account with a small sting ray (and for its size it fought pretty well).
Satisfied with the good start we set ourselves on the beach at night with some booze and cooked food on the beach with the full moon for company and no human intervention. What an amazing setup it was…. Divine !
Next day was for a morning trolling session. And within the first 10 mins we got hits, sanju hooked the first one. Reel went krrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr .. the fight was good and soon he landed his first BARRA ! The smile on his face said it all !
Soon I got hooked to one it gave some good strong runs (cant say how many yards). It went towards the rocks and the boat also drifted towards the rocks in the meantime because of the current I think, couldn’t move it away from the rocks in time. And just when I was reeling in … the beauty jumped clear out of the water and threw the lure. So for me it was fighting and sighting only. I had a smile on my face too… I experienced a wonderful run by the Barra , did not loose any line/lure and got to see the beauty… what else could a newbie ask for ?
Sanjay got another hit which ran non stop like crazy but somehow managed to unhook itself so we don’t know what it was.
On the way back I was kind of feeling low on not getting anything in such a promising place.
Just when I was starting to reel in the lure, boat still moving ….. Krrrrrrrrr it went. The pull was strong and it was taking line like crazy on a medium tight drag. It felt like I had hooked on to a rock initially. After its runs it stopped and it just refused to move. It took some time before I could start reeling it in. After an awesome (by newbie standards) fight it was brought up .. A Blubberlip Snapper, It was around(5.5lbs) lets say 6lbs J ! Somewhere in the forum I had read that these guys are amazing fighters, now I agree. I was infact surprised seeing its size.
(snapper taking line)
Evening session sanjay landed another Barra while spinning, couldn’t see the fight as it was dark and I was little distance away from the action. It sure was fun.
Satisfied and tired, decided to call it an evening and let the spirits flow at the super- moon lit beach with some good food, because the day deserved a toast or two (well not two … ). The evening was totally toasted by both of us.
Next day we left the place and headed back to Mumbai satisfied and happy that our efforts were aptly rewarded.
(Riot of colours .. Holi revelry)
End of the day a weekend well spent !
Cheers and Tight lines to all …. So long !
