Lakshadweep this year was a little different for us as the trip got a bit disorganized with the booking to our usual resort being cancelled due to a government ban to allow tourists . We finally made it across to the Islands thanks to our boat captian who got us the entry permit as his family guests.
We had made this trip targeting the 50kg plus GT which has eluded us all these years. We did catch some fish around the 40kg mark , many small gts and the usual by catch.
Rahul came very close to our target when he hooked an absolute monster, fought the fight of his life with the fish stripping him twice on a near locked drag , we saw the last few strands on his reel centre more than once. Finally managed to stop the fish palming the spool and the fish was eventually at the boat. 1.5 metre+ monster !! minimum 55kg in my opinion . I have never seen a GT this big in all these years of GT fishing. I took the leader in my hand, the captain and Jeenu were at the tail of the fish figuring out a way to haul this giant into the boat when the leader parted in my hands. The fish floated away ,ever so slowly , righted itself, and swam away lazily into the deep!! I doubt if we will ever see a GT this big again.

Nice report Jeen,

Congrats to Rahul, technically speaking, if you get the leader in hand the fish is considered landed.

Pictures would have been great of that fish of a life time, now go for a 60KG monster guys, I am sure you will find one on one of your trips.

Congrats again,

Bobby

Wow, some super catches Jeen. You guys really are having great time with all those monster GTs.

Well, as you are in GT fishing big time, can you elaborate how one can target GT from shore. It is my understanding that these monster do feed near beaches. Unfortunately, the places we fish, does not have any deep reef and hooking and landing a big one is almost impossible as they cut you within seconds.

I am sure, these fishes can be targeted from some of the beaches where we will have a fair chance of landing them.

What do you think?

Regards,

Ali. :P

Hi Ali,

Gts can be targeted from shore as you are aware. See the Gts the Chennai guys are catching ( shore caught from the harbour)

When ever we are on the west coast, we hear locals talk about big GTs hooked from the shore mostly on live bait. Some of our members here have caught Gts from the shore .
I personally feel that in places like Malwan, Ratnagiri, Vijay durg ect where the offsore Gt habitat is near by ( like 10 to 15 km ) The Big Gts will frequent the harbour side or esuary mouth to hit the mullets and get back to their habitat .
Even when we are popping the offshore reefs the big Gts normally hit the Stick bait. This I think is because we pop in tandem one rod with a big popper and one rod with a stick bait. The popper attracts the hyper active small gts and the slower cautious big gts . The smaller guys are faster and not as selective in what they hit( lack of experience I guess :D ) . We cast the stick bait at a distance behing the popper and the slower Bigger Gts slam it readily.

This is just a theory which seems to work for us.

If you are fishing a rocky coast you can hope to land a big Gt by using heavier braid around the 100lb test and a long leader say 150 to 200 lb and not allowing the fish to run ( no line out :D )

Jeen

Hi jeen

As already explained its possible to target Gts from the shore. I was wondering if you can help ppl who want to try by recommending the right lures, colors and weights.

I was checking Super Strike lures the other day, their short neck popper and needle plug seems will do the trick. But the issues is which colors to choose, there are many colors available. They cost big bucks so your guidance / help to choose between all the color options and the weights will be great.

Hope to catch a Gt from the shore in the future if not from Dubai then India.

Regards

Kashif

Hi Jeen,

Just curious. Have you done sea fishing from Kerala anywhere ? boat or surf ? I tried surf fishing from Kannur (wifes house) and from Thrissur (my home town) and all I could get was cat fish, plenty of them :(.

TIA,
Sabarish.

hi santosh, morbi is around 250 kms from okha. the area from jamnagar to bet dwarka is a marine sanctuary. full of reefs and mangrove forests. water there is very clear and ideal for snorkelling and diving. want to explore the area around okha for shore fishing. :D

All floating lures ( 1 M Dving Depth) x rap flloating is an example. Minnow / silver colours preferred. Dont forget the Cut bait rod. Have one rod with cut bait out and a spiining out fit for lures to keep you busy. Would suggest a 30lb wire trace for both lures and bait as that coat is infested by huge barracudas. Go in November! is the best time. Send pictures of thr fish you guys catch:-)

@Bobby, if I can replace 'more' with 'one' safe, then no, no one has told me, no message about why my PM is blocked and hence no clue. But I kinda guess as when I hit the "PM" button, it shows the below message.

"Sorry, but the aministrator has prevented you from sending private messages."

I understand it could be of some mistake from my side and since it was not intentional to break the forum rules, I am only guessing here also!

PS: Thrissur has heavy rains, forecast says same for the week ahead and its same forecast for ekm also. Rods/reels will remain in the car itself I guess without seeing any actions :(

My apologies, meant "Mod" not "More", I think it may be a glitch with the system, perhaps with some setting, if you have not received a warning or anything.

Even the very obnoxious do get a warning or are told before anything like this is done. So no Mod or Admin will do anything like that to the mildly sarcastic. :D
