Hi Guys,

Three of my friends (Jimmy, Sudhir and Murali) and I were fishing at Mangalore coast from 22nd to 24th Nov, 2010.

Apart from the excellent fellowship, we also had a superb time fishing.
22nd produced one Barra (35 lbs) and three Ravas.
23rd - two Ravas.
24th - one Barra (19 lbs) one Ravas.

We also missed 3 more Barras and half a dozen Ravas.

Must have been some awsome fishing guys. Great fishes!! Well done. Which one in those pictures is you?

The fishing must have been real fast and furious, reminds me of the good old days in Bombay when Ravas and sometimes Barras used to be on the bite like that, we used to stand like gun slingers waiting for them to feed. First lure out there usually caught the fish.

Did you all just manage to get the timing right by fluke or is the fishing always like that there? I understand it was just after the full moon.

Thanks a lot guys.

@Bobby....yes, fishing was good. I am the one in the 2nd and 3rd photo. We have been fishing this area for the past several years. So many years of fishing in this area has given us a fair knowledge of the waters.
You were right, it is just past the full moon. We do plan our trip according to the rain, tide, time of tide and the moon. And we have been fairly successful. But there is certainly an element of fluke and luck.
I still remember the day (about 5 years back) when 4 of us were able to land about 27 Ravas in a day. Also some times we have not even been able to sight a tadpole.
That's what fishing is all about!!!!!!

@Arish...... The fish were feeding frenzy and am sure they would have even taken a condom if you had thrown one.
Most of the fish were landed on Cotton Cordel-Red fin, Yozuri and skitter popper.

@Jeen.....that sure is a good spot. Even if we do not catch any fish, this place does not fail to boost up my fishing nerve

@Mani....What do you mean by visit Chennai? I do live in Chennai. Only thing is that you do not call me.

Thanks again guys.

Ravi

Reading over various posts, it seems like the season down south, for Ravas at least begins in November, is that a correct assumption? What are the good times to fish around Manglore?

We have a Ravas run twice a year in Bombay, March - May (begining) and Sept - Oct. November - Jan onwards though considered to be good for bara, I have not met with much success in Bombay. I have noticed quite a slack in the months of November and December, even trolling offshore Bombay is dead during those months. However I have experienced very good fishing in these months from Murud Jangira onwards and going further south right up to Port Batkal, I have not gone further.

Bobby, out of my experience, the best time to fish for Ravas and Barras at the Mangalore coast would be October and November. (soon after the rains and as the water gets clearer).

Thanks Ali, Chris, Spoonangler, Mighty Marlin and Viper.

Ravi
