Had been a long time since I took a break. So took some days off and decided to head somewhere. Ofcourse angling had to be in the agenda so called up Santosh to suggest some place for fresh water spinning (someting I had not done much as I mostly fish saltwater). Wanted to catch small mullies or murrels at best and didn't expect too much. Nashik was decided and I left for Igatpuri on Thursday 6th May 2010.

Set out to Bhandardara on Friday (7th may 2010) morning. Cast various sized spoons but no hit. End of day, sitting in a local bar while waiting for the bus I got a call from Santosh saying they (him and Alibhai) were coming there the next day (8th May 2010). My ticket was already booked for return on 8th. I took a decision to extend my stay and cancelled returning (I didn't know then that I had taken one of the best decisions of my life).

They arrived on Saturday (8th May 2010). We had lunch in a dhaba on the way and then reached the lake. Heat was intense but we started spinning. I had never caught a single fish by spinning (have caught many on bait) and I was going to ask Santosh about how it feels when you get a strike on a swimming lure. Then it happened. I had hooked a fish and it was fighting well. As it came close I asked Santosh who got a view of the fish, which one it was and he said Mahseer. I thought “you kidding me” and then I saw it and it was really Mahseer. Santosh clicked the photograph by my phone and then we released the fish. Alibhai had also come by then and he congratulated me asked about the fight. I was excited. Mera trip to vasool ho gaya tha.

Next day (Sunday) again we went to the same place. Alibhai and Santosh set up a rod with live bait bottom rig while simultaneously spinning continued. Had carried lunch and we ate in the tree shade enjoying the beauty of the place. All took a little nap. Me and Santosh tried to break some Kairi's (raw mangoes) from the trees. And then again got back to work. This time Alibhai got a hit and there it was....... another Mahseer. The fish was photographed and released. Evening we packed and left for Mumbai.

All in all it was a great trip not just in terms of fishing but spending quality time with great anglers and seeing them work. The beauty of the place was amazing and ofcourse, “I caught my first Mahseer”.

Santosh, please post the images of Alibhai's mahseer that you clicked.

Good report Sanju.

Good to know you landed your first mahaseer. It was very kind of you to safely release fish. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to do some freshwater fishing :)

Cheers mate.

Congratulations once again Sanju. I am sure you will remember this catch for a long- long time. :D

The trip was beautiful. Small mahseers were hitting the spoon and between myself and Santosh, we got 11 hits but no hookups(Apart from one I got). The best part of the trip, apart from Sanju landing his first Mahseer, sleeping under the shade of trees in simmering afternoon, gazing the clear sky with multitude of twinkling stars, was seeing a Mahseer of good size surfacing under my feet with its mouth wide open. Great trip. Lot of fun and a fish to boost. What more one can ask in life.

Regards,

Ali.

Thank you Dezz, MM, Ravi, Sanjay, Prakash and Saravanan. It was my pleasure to fish with Alibhai and Santosh. Had that call from Santosh not come, I would have been back in Mumbai after yet another fish-less fishing trip. It was truely a morale booster.

Thank you Lionheart, Abhi and Eljefe,

Abhi, its good in a way that I caught the size I did. The desire to catch the good sized one (now that I know there are bigger ones) will get me there again. Its a great motivation. Plus I have developed a liking for freshwater angling now.

Happy fishing.
