Well if let the guys like Ali and Santo loose they will always have one or the other quest lined up for you. This time, it was to catch a Mahseer in Mharashtra.

The elusive one .

The question was where to go for it? In the river? or in those dams? Which are abundant in the state. So we decided (Ali ,Santo and me with my semi broken hand ) to go for the dams first and the target was Bhandardhara a dam near Nasik.

Last Saturday (I am late with report) we started off and even with trying our level best could not make it before dark to the place, so it was chicken curry and rice and some good dose of rum (for me). We had to just chill. So we did

Early morning it was really chilly. can you beat it? (we were at a good height though). We hit the spot and the morning session went on for around 3 hours with all of us spinning. Ali lost a big one and Santosh got a big bite but no hook up. I was not so lucky.

Well by the lunch time I had manged to get a hell of a swelling in my still mending hand and it was all over for me

The evening session saw Santo and Ali starting off with full wind(I was a excited spectator). Santo hooked his fish in his first cast his first Mahseer, as he was playing with really very light tackle(god knows why the bugger can open a shop now) it was a very pleasant and decent fight after which he landed the fish and every one was jumping with joy, “gold at the end of the Rainbow” at last. We do have Mahseer in Mharashtra

We decided to call it off a day because we had to get back to Mumbai but it is definitely started, the hunt for a big one now .We are absolutely convinced that we have some really big one out there and locals are full of stories of them.

We are going back as soon as possible

Hey Rajat,

Thanx for a very nice report. The place is really beautiful but through the photographs it looks amazing. What more a angler needs, clear water, good landscape and fishes on the bite.

Now we have almost all the game fishes near Mumbai ( wish there were trouts also :!: ) so what more one can ask..

And yes... Cangratulation Santo for your first Gold....Keep it up..

My Mahseer kit is ready and it is not raining...

So what you say.. :?:

Regards,

Ali.

Thought I'll catch a Murrel or two. And hence brought my 4 to 8 lb eagle GT rod and cardinal reel with 8 lb line. trust me, light tackle is FUN  .

I too was in Nasik between 17th to 19th. First thing I did before leaving was to call up Rajatda to know if there was any chance of fishing there. To my delight I came to know that I could try Mahseer fishing there. I got very excited and collected some spoons from Rajatda along with valuable advice. Also consulted Santosh and left with not very high hopes but with intentions of having some fun.
I had only 18th to try fishing. Woke up early and left for Gangapur Dam. Did not have appropriate information about permissions. Found out that a permission pass was required which is issued in the city (which was pretty far from the dam and it was too early to find anyone there).
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6244/dsc00460n.jpg
So went back to the hotel, had breakfast and headed for the Paatbandhara office. Was told there that the passes are issued to groups for specific purposes like educational trips etc and getting an individual pass would be difficult and also unecessary. I was advised to go not through the gate but from over the dam and around it. Wow!!!!! now the trouble was the dam measured in miles and it was too hot by then.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6808/dsc00477srr.jpg
Anyways I did that and finally reached waters edge and cast the spoon for a couple of hours. Had no luck and meanwhile met a guy who worked for the contractor who has the fishing contract for Gangapur. He said that they had put prawns in the dam, so there were very little fishes. But he did show me a spot where good sized Rohus and Catlas are caught. He said there was no Mahseer, mallies were very little and few and a very occasional Murral. By this time I was too tired to change rig and fish for carps (also the heat was intense), so I decided to call it the day and headed towards Sula wines. Finally sipping wine and looking at Gangapur dam at the distance, felt it was a tiring........ but a fun day.

Hey Sanju gald to know that you had a fun day don't worry the fish will be hooked in days to come we all have our days . Just keep fishing mate

BTW Sanju(or for any one) I think you are not copying and pasting the right link that's the reason the pics are not showing in the text . What you should do is to copy and paste from the imageshack the "link for forums" which opens after the uploaded pic so scroll down a bit once you upload . I it always fun to see the pics and text together in a story
cheers keep fishing [smilie=coolup.gif] [smilie=coolup.gif]

Hi Guys,

Missed the trip with you'll. congrats to santo and everyone for the mahseer. Hope you catch big ones. I had gone to a local river here Saturday evening. Was lucky to hook 2 mahseers and 1 mulli. The mahseers weighed 6 pounds and 4 pounds. But the fight was awesome as usual because they were hooked in the rapids. Unfortunately didnt carry a camera along. Congrats once again and happy fishing.

Spoon.

We did go back there and the place is even better than what we thought on the first trip. Unfortunately this time it was Rajat who missed out on the trip. My self and Santo decided to revisit the place to explore it further and accordingly we reached the spot after a risky but otherwise inspiring drive. The beauty of the place is beyond description in monsoon.

As it was raining, it was not possible to take photographs. The water level was very low and it was a very good time to understand the otherwise below water topography and I am sure this trip will help us very much in our future visit.

The high of this trip was the beauty of the place, exploring it further, getting wet  , listning stories from the locals about a man-eating leopard who has killed as recently as one week back :!: and the startled look on the face of Santosh when mistaking him as a great hunter, the locals begged him to catch the Leopard which was causing them lot of anxiety   and yes we did landed some small Mahseers on bait but as the rule goes that no photo no fish, those are not counted....

The place is a heaven to me and I am going there again very soon...

Regards,

Ali.
