We catch lot of this fish in Powai (locally called Khavli), Carnatic carp :?: , I fish for them with 4 lb line and small 12 / 14 size hooks ..good fun.. I think they grow up to 1 Kg + mark.

This was the first fish I caught on a rod ....on the 4th of March 07. Took a mepps 3 spinner. :D

No Bobby, Powai lake does not have any predatory fish species.

Catch lot of these small carps while targeting Mrigal's.

I use light 6.6 ft rod paired with 1000 class daiwa reel with 4 lb silver thread mono and size 12/14 hooks. The biggest I have caught on this setup was a 2.5 - 3 Kg mrigal.

I release all fish caught in powai.

Contrary to your belive, Powai has many predatory fishes.
-Mahseer
-Mangur
-Singhada
-Arwana
-Olive carp
-Mirgal
-May be Barra..

These are few which comes to mind immidiatly.

It is you who do not try to target them......

When are we spinning our lures in Powai as we discussed many times...

Regards,

Ali.

Alibhai,

You once mentioned Giant Gourami in Powai. Isn't that also a predatory fish? I know i can't keep them (actually the smaller cousins) with my goldfish and guppies as they eat them up.

Hi Ken,

I may be wrong but I do not think that a G. Gourami will qualify as a true predator.

OK.. lets spin soon. Out of all the places in the lake, the island looks most promising to try some shallow diving plugs.

I am sure, there will be more exotic fish in the lake..

-Mahseer - Apart from the one caught recently, not a single catch is was reported in ages.
-Mangur- The damn sight of that fish gives me nightmare (Yup, i know how happy I was to catch them sometime back)
-Singhada- will pass this one.
-Arwana- the bugger has disappeared, wanted to catch it for sending it as a gift to Fred. (must have been released by some aquarium hobbyist)
-Olive carp- :?:
-Mirgal.. They should take spinners
-May be Barra... I am sure one or two big Mama's are still roaming somewhere in the lake... 40 - 50 pounders :D

Santosh

Honestly I don't know much about Gourami's. The only one's I've met are the two in my daughter's tank. And they are nasty little fellows.

Thanks Bobby!

Dear SANTOSH/ RAJAT DA/ BOBBY,
I am not party to this wieghty issue cause
1) I didnt caught the said fish
2) I was not present at the time of catch
3) I logged off at 2.00pm and the catch was at 4.00 PM

It is just that iam posting for them. conveying yours and their message to each other.
The matter of the fact is although even i feel fishy about it being 4kg, i being just a "data entry operator" didnt/couldnt have my say. :?
Hope this put to rest everything.
With warm regards

Hi Prakash,

Rajat has put it very nicely, just pulling some leg my friend.
I myself sometimes do it. if the fish is 8- 9 LB, I'll happy change it to 10

Adding some weight is alright, we all do it. But this was 2- 3 LB fish and calling it 8-9 LB one is [smilie=laff.gif]

Santosh

RAJAT DA,
The bait was nothing special. Bread with over ripe banana kneeded to made very soft sticking the hook. no color or essence.
I hope you can repeat the sucess at powai with possibly more weighty catch

I am new to this group and have good experience in this Business (Jabalpur city in Madhya Pradesh). I went to Manchenbele last Saturday and have no idea about free catch(fishing is allowed).

Do we need to take a permission in Manchenbele ?

Last Sunday I’ve got 1 catch on Mutathi(after 1 KM) and with following things:

[1] 1 small hook (got it from USA –small 2 for $1.15)
[2] Purchased simple plastic wire from Marwari store
[3] Simple wood for floater
[4] Bait – Cheeze :D ;

But after joining this group I got to know so much. Now I need to purchase good fishing equipment.
