A long weekend fishing trip is some thing we all dream of.

But a vacation with Family was also overdue and every one at home was making plans. Mom wanted to visit religious place, Pop to our ancestral house, Wife any place where I cant go fishing. :?

After lot of debate, cancellations & with my Bro-in-law and Sis deciding to join us on the last moment we decided to visit Tarkarli (wicked me).

6 Adults & 3 kids in one Innova, we could barely fit along with ton load of cloths & toys for children.

I somehow managed to get two travel rods and five lures in the car. Not too hopeful of getting any chance of serious fishing I left back my Gaff, forgot the pliers.

We reached Tarkarli on Friday evening after a wonderful drive down from Kolhapur to Vaibhav wadi via Gagan bawda road.

The plan for Saturday morning was to take the family out on the boat to visit a beautiful sandy Island & if lucky to see some Dolphins.

On our way back after a three hour long fun filled outing, I rigged my rod with one 15 Ft deep diver, fluoro carbon leader and started trolling a place that was 2 km up river.

I have always caught fish at this place but all small stuff. I was casually holding the rod, intention was to catch a MJ or two for Pot.

In just 5 mins I got a big hit, I almost lot the grip on the rod, I knew something big was on the other end and gave a nice long run. Every one on the boat was excited… and I was nervous, never felt that nervous when fighting a fish… 2 x hooks to 40 lb fluoro leader, no Gaff it all played on my mind …. After all the audience was very special.

The best fight, played the fish till it came belly up…. My biggest ever.. on a weighing scale it measured 17.50 Kg… seriously wanted to release the fish, but the boat guy said that releasing fish brings bad luck (I know why they say it) & that was enough for my Dad to stop me. The fish was gifted to the locals. Carefully removed the hooks with bare hands (that was crazy) as the pliers was 550 km away dreaming about the big fish.

All set of hooks were bent and I had to get them in shape by pressing them down against the wooden seats … this continued till the last fish I caught.

That morning I caught 5 more MJ’s & one smaller Grouper all in less than 20 mins of fishing …. Boys were happy & the elder one came up to me and said “ next time I come to Powai, I am fishing with you” (he is a big fan of Ali Uncle :-) ).

Evening, after a nice lunch that had freshly caught MJ’s fried in spicy malwani massala.. I took out a small dingy boat with a 8 HP outboard and went for a short troll at a small reef close to the shore.. Rigged the same lure with out of shape hooks.. two back to back hits but lost the fish because the hooks had possibly lost all its strength and were opening… pressed the hooks against the boat… let the lure out and lowered the drag to very minimum.… bhang.. fish on …. Gave a long and fast screaming run.. brought him close, and it went again for a second one …. A nice Barracuda… the biggest cuda I have caught.

Total fish caught were 8, all on one lure and in less than 1 hour of total trolling time…

Some Pics That I would like to share…. :D :D

Man you are a fish magnet. I was wondering that fishes usually run away from the area I am (I am the repulsive side of the magnet), but still I hooked that fish in Powai.
Now I figure, cuz you were around. I should take you with me from next time onwards.

Great Trip Santo and a very nice writeup. In the sence it was a complete trip as you were with all your loved ones. Congratulation on the Gobra and barracuda. The Gobra is Huge man.

And yes, I am happy that Shree is willing to sit with you in Powai.  But watch out mate, Powai is my turf.

It is high time that we do one trip together. So plan one soon. You know I have to settle my account with Barra and our Ravas bet is still pending.

Regards,

Ali.
