My first sea fishing trip…..
Every year I go to my native place with family to Konkan but this year I was much exited because this year I was armed with my new fishing combo gifted by my uncle and the gears given by Santosh along with his wonderful salt striker combo for sea fishing and his lucky lures… I had discussed and revised the tricks and techniques of spinning and trolling both with Santosh, Alibhai and Vishal for number of times so now I was eager to implement everything I learnt and hopefully catch some big fishes in the sea.
First three days I had been spinning from the rocky shore near my home, an estuary, few dangerous places on the rocks for about 6-8 hrs a day but no luck…
Then on the fourth day in the late evening when I was spinning from a rocky shore near by with sore shoulders; on the third cast my lure stopped midway and before i could curse the rocks… I felt a jerk and the fish at the other end went like a torpedo… I was so exited and happy it took some time to realize that I have to properly land the fish if I wanted this happiness to last… after few runs here and there and a beautiful jump I landed the fish with the help of my friend.
I was almost went mad when he said ‘CHANAK’ it was a nice 16lb barramundi… I started casting again and caught a smaller barramundi about 5 lb…
This was more than enough to hook me to sea fishing for rest of my life.. after all the shiny armor of a barra is something most wont forget more so if its your first big fish. I called Santosh, Alibhai, Bablu Bhai & Vishal to share my happiness.
With some nice words of encouragement from my angling friends, I again visited the same spot the next day caught some Mangrove Jacks.. again I was very happy as this time it was a different type of fish & fight.
On the third day, I went with some new ideas and wanted to try a new location which is known to have decent size fish.
On my second cast, I hooked something BIG, it took a straight run of about 30 yards and turned to the left towards the rocks, I some how managed to stop the run and started to gain some line when the fish jumped clear out of the water to give me a glimpse of a barra which was about 1.5 times bigger than my first catch. Unfortunately I lost the fish, but not the determination. After about 20 mins of casting, I landed one more barra of about 9 Lb. Later in the evening, I got one more hit but could not connect properly.
It was diwali time and for couple of days fishing took a back seat with Santosh assuring me to join over the weekend, But unfortunately he had to cancel it on the last moment
. On the last day of my trip, we decided to go Trolling. This was my first time and I had only some tips from my Angling Buddies. But I was determined to catch a grouper.
Within 5 mins of letting the line out, I got a hit from a small MJ. Landed carefully and again started the troll. Immediately, got one more hit, this time it was HUGE and nearly broke my back with a good 20 mins fight. The result was a 20 Lb grouper. My first and not less than a dream.
Was upbeat and asked my friends to take the boat back as I wanted to show the fish to every one at home. However, we decided to troll on the way back.
I was feeling very relaxed and was a lil casual when I got a hit which nearly took away my rod. The fish fought like hooligan refusing to come up. It was a hard 15 mins fight where the fish was determined to cut me on the rocks, for a moment I thought that I am going to lose the fish… I was very fortunate to land it in the end, my jaw dropped to see a 16 Lb Mangrove Jack
. The best fighter indeed.
I wanted Santosh to come to my Native place , but he gave me a slip like a slippery eel
. Now my next endeavor is to find a lure to hook him.
