Had a good trip to Bheemeshwari last week - Dec 8/9/10. My friend the veggie angler Satish, me and a couple of others. As we got into the camp the conditions seemed perfect - quite a lot different from the cloudy, damp weather at Bangalore - it was nice and sunny and the water looked beautiful. I remember telling Satish - this is going to be the day you catch your first Murrel. Met Sandeep at Bheemeshwari - nice meeting you sir - admire the work you do for the Kaveri wildlife sanctuary.

Anyway to cut a long story short....I was fishing scum frogs for the first time and Satish was fishing - well he was practically fishing for the first time :-)...so I cast out into this nice looking pool a few times and there was not much interest...when I saw this shadow moving in the water and I showed it to Satish...told him to go for it....and would you know it...this is what the man comes up with in his first few casts :-) Of course he wouldnt hold it...gave me some nonsense about seeing a crappy movie where Snakeheads hunted people...so here I am holding his first ever Murrel....I put it at about 3 kgs...

The first murrel - on a No 5 gold Mepps - very close upstream from the camp

Caught a couple more smaller murrel....here's one..

Later that afternoon...

Shatty's first mahseer on ragi...luckily he held this one for the camera.

Later that evening....opposite bank to the camp....it was almost dark when I spied this nice pool....very first cast with my scum frog......this thing explodes out of the water and takes it.....this was definitely my biggest murrel...again a little over 3.5 kgs is what I think

All fish caught that day are still swimming free.... :-) I hope

Next day was not great...fished the whole day - long and hard...had 3 small murrel and a couple of catfish between 4 of us...not a great day. Satish had this one on ragi....

Dec 10th was also not great - for some reason the fish were completely off the bite....till the evening....my friend Venu had this one...

Image

Before that - I went back to the same pool where I had caught the murrel on the first day and fished it for about 20 mins with nothing...then I saw this murrel swimming lazily after my frog till he was close to my feet...with no more line to reel in....I was hopping the frog around close to his head and he still wouldnt bite....then he took off....I quickly changed over to a silver spinner in the fading light....literally bringing it all around this fish - no mood to strike at all !!! - My friend Dilip came along and then we both literally ran patterns around this fish....till FINALLY !!!! he took Dilip's silver mepps no 5.

Yeah yeah...trick photo....wasnt that big a fish !!! :-) ;-)

Ghillie Ramaswamy with a better looking photo ;-)

Fished the next morning with absolutely no luck and headed back to Bangalore about 11 am...Tight lines and until next time...Sudhir

Fantastic snakehead Sudhir, and well done Shatty.
Sudhir the mahseer Venu is holding is a mussullah. Hope he grows up to be a 100 lb beauty.
Regards
Owen
