A message at 9-30pm , while i was battling Delhi's infamous traffic jams, triggered off the latest episode.
Kenneth-Mahseerken to those who know, was ready to rock at 5-30 am.
The celebrations at Brannigans celebrating IFG anniversary were reaching a crescendo, and suddenly every one wanted IN
So I reach my destination, whip up a hasty bait of bread, rosgolla(damn, these Bongs really hav something going!), vanilla essence and the typical 'Cauvery bait', only use atta OD'd on hing (asafoetida) instead of ragi...
5-30am on sunday sees 3 cars rendezvous at Kens place, and off we go.
Pump house at 7-30am and the bait is cast. And cast and cast and cast with a few nibbles.
By about 11-30, with not a nibble, Dev, Anupam, Abhijeet and LM have to head back...or they would be declared AWOL
Sam from IA joins us and Sanjay, Ken, Sam and I head out for another secret 'Jodh' and the magic begins

Image

After a couple of false 'astartes' Sanjay got the hang of his new Berkley- Shimano combo and with Ken giving a solid enfilade cover, the catch rate was on.
I decided to chip in- and, wonder of wonders, using a tiny no 10 hook on my 300g Mahseer rod (Yes, people do grab the wrong rod in the dark  ) actually got 2 tiny 2inch tiddlers! then a biggish cat and the coup de grace-a turtle...so Ken's turned the heat on me by passing the 'turtleken' hex??

With only the sweet, bread bait, Ken and Sanjay were firing all cylinders-like the carp couldnt get enough of the stuff!

Image

At 2-30, the silent alarms in my head were going at it like a organist going with all stops out and I'm-"please guys, can we pack it in the next half hour?"
and then I cast out again and again and again-so 4-30 comes up, we reluctantly pack in and head for home.

Axx

Great trip. Lots of people deep into hangovers. Lots of fish. And best of all, I did not catch the turtle.

Arrre it was the best of times and the worst of times...
Great outing with three hours of sleep. By some strange karma it always happens revelry or dinner will ensure that you don't hit hay till one am and then three hours later you are trying to make filter coffee without shoving Nescafe in by mistake. Trust me that branded sawdust can't jerk my body back from dreamland.
Pick up Anupam, NM and Abhijeet(he was actually ready on time and perky at that), then try to coax old Bolero to maintain high speed till G gaon. Brief hellos and clip to pump house, cast like madmen with all bait possible. Time still clicks away and not a hint of a bite. Even expensive gulp bait given a shrug by the fish and so we go back to earthworms...Anupam after a few hours looks at me with a gawd i moved heaven and earth for this???
I keep talking to him in a tone one uses while being accosted by a ferocious hound and you are looking for the right command," Its just been a while, fish are reacting to our wrong clothes, cigarette smelly hands etc..."
But then its time to rush back as had a lunch engagement, promised wife to head back at ten, we bid adieu at 11. Reach the gates of Delhi by 3.30 am not getting any sound from home on mobile phone...fearing the worst (they went to eat without me) I drive home. Blow slightly softened by wise Abhijeet's fish gift, has mother-in-law break into smiles, wife says always had faith in you, you needn't prove anything. I am unable to speak at this juncture due to fatigue...
Then Asif message's about ten carp being caught, I read message aloud for effect and stagger off for a bath. This display of supreme sacrifice to family needs over fishing allows me to go for dinner with them.
Will I do it again? You bet. But next time I'm gonna carry some protein drinks with me. The exhaustion is killing.

Dev

Dev, Now you'll have people sending money across for the spoons!
I Have a few ready for Bhakra soon, will give a tech report soon!

Gavin- 300g rod meant the Rowen tackle 100-300g CW rod  grabbed the wrong 'un instead of the Ugly stik light rod!

Nothing special about the bait Guys-the recipe is there for all-use and enjoy.

Sam, did you use some of the atta bait ?
Best

Hey Owen!

Guess who caught one.

Hahahaa He refused to touch it. Just got on top for a slow ride to the water's edge.

Don't worry the turtle was released unharmed. But with hurt feeling no doubt.

Gavin,

It's over between me and the damn turtles. They just stay away from me and I from them. There are no hard feelings. We just grew apart. It happens. Life!!!

This particular one seemed a bit more upset then the rest of his clan. Refused to even look at me. Kept smiling at the Doc though. I think then have something going now.

cheers

Ken i don't think you can part ways that easily
Imagine in 50 years of fishing, i have caught only 1 turtle, and that was when i was 10 years old.
You have a special talent mate  and i think it is brushing off on Doc

I always maintain that fishing is a very ZEN thing for me.
There I am , with this beautiful peacock feather float ( daughter painted and marked it!), a decent cast, and I can feel the strike 10 seconds before it happened.... the float goes down, I have a hookset, reel in and, and, and a few m away the head breaks the surface-Its Ken's mate!
The next talent that brushes off on me? you guys are invited for a chinese aprodisiac dinner.

Looks like the only way to get rid of the hex is to go to Bhakra for some exorcism, Ken??

Common Carp, called Komal Carp locally, and a few rahu. As IG puts it the typical RCC fare. RCC being Rahu. Catla and Carp.

By the way what is the best bait for Catla. And what kind of rig should one use.

Hi eljefe,

Sure tried the atta, worked well. Infact I tried every atta the "man" could lay hand on and bring to me. On one soggy lot that he brought, I used my extra dry "steamed" (idly style) atta and made a cocktail that hung on the hook a little longer.

The pet store in Khan Market is selling a salami type dog chew. Should try it next time, i/o worms at the PH.

Cheers!!

Sam, my fav is regular soya chunks, soaked in water to soften and fried in 'kadva tel' with a generous topping of hing, jeera and prawn paste.Has problems though-
1.If Dev is around, hard to keep him from wolfing it down (in a John Woo style...) suddenly no bait!
2.You have to file an an 'environmental impact statement' with the local pollution board
3.Wife is going to kick butt for messing up her kitchen
