Hi Guys,

Where is the entry for this others side ? Do we have to come in from Magadi Road ?I remember seeing a post on this earlier.

Whats the ground bait to carry ? And what about worms ?
What tackle combination would be best .

Looks like manchinbele isn't a good idea due to the independence day celebrations happening there tomorrow.

I'm off on a scouting trip to Kanakapura road. Let's see how it goes.

The trip to Kanakapura was a waste, the dam I had found on wikimapia turned out to be dry when we reached there. I finally got Riaz on the phone and turned back from Kanakapura and headed off to join Riaz at Anekal.

The lake,

Catfishin!

Total: One 5 kilo cat landed by Riaz, , I landed two cats, 6.5 kilos and 7.2 kilos. The 6.5 kilo was released.

Great Guys..

Sure catch at Anekal, is it? Last time, Riaz had caught so many cat fishes there and now again this team has caught so many..

BTW, What was the bait used? Chicken gut?

Are there no issues there with the locals? Is the lake not leased? Plan to go there on the next general holiday.
Regards,

Arokiaraj

Yes, we used chicken gut.

Arokia I would not go there again. The locals didn't look like a good bunch, bound to be trouble.

The same cats can be found in most of the lakes around bangalore suggest you use the same techniques elsewhere.

Hey Prakash,

I heard about the rude shock that Viper had and was glad that things went OK. Just a word of caution to all you wonderful chaps at IA.... be SAFE.

Looking at Prakash's pics i'm reminded about Riaz landing net. It's a real beauty mate. Where did you get it from?

Hi Shaphan

Yes that's the same rod which handled a 35lb mahseer sometime back.

The fish is the African catfish, commonly known as Thai Magur.

The African catfish Clarias gariepinus is also known as the African magur or sharptooth catfish. It is probably the most widely distributed fish in Africa, as its native range extends from South Africa through central, west and north Africa, into the Middle East and eastern Europe. In the 1950s it was introduced to Indo-China by the French, and was subsequently widely distributed in south and south-east Asia for fish-farming. In many cases, however, the introduced fish is a hybrid between the African catfish and an indigenous species C. macrocephalus.

Breathes air and walks on land The African catfish is an ideal species for aquaculture because it is a very hardy fish and has an extremely high growth rate. Under intensive pond management systems, fish could be reared to ‘table size’ every 3 to 4 months. Full-grown fish can grow to more than a metre long, but smaller fish are normally preferred for eating. The catfish can easily become established in the wild, as it has such a wide environmental tolerance range. It can survive in waters with high turbidity, low oxygen levels and extremes of temperature, salinity and pH, and during dry periods can burrow into moist sand. It occurs in almost any habitat but favours floodplains, large sluggish rivers, and lakes and dams. It can even move overland by crawling on its pectoral fins, and breathe air using a specialised breeding organ.

The catfish is a threat to biodiversity as it eats almost anything, including indigenous fish, birds (even domestic ducklings), frogs, snails, crabs and insects, as well as plant material and plankton. It is a voracious predator, and may hunt in packs, herding fish prey towards shallower water where they can be easily caught.

The rod was a 10-30gm casting weight 8 foot length. The hook was a Size 1 regular O' Shaughnessy. Bait was chicken intestines.

Yeah BOPS

Your rite about the threat to the local species. We are facing the same problem here by our fisheries people who are trying to play there role as God and know nothing about there Job. Tarbella one of the premier spots for Masheer is now under threat buy snake heads that were introduced into an already fragile echo system. As it is Masheer is under pressure and to top it all of we have the introduction of a predator. :x

God knows what we are trying to do. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Magur, Chicken guts and you in immaculate whites? How do you manage? Me? After chicken innards expedition, I come back looking / smelling of the rot and besides me, the clothes also get fumigated... one more clue about the initiation ceremony of the phg!
