Here is a small brief on customs duties payable on outdoor goods. This is to inform all of you that customs can sting :(

Basic Customs duty - 10%
Countervailing duty (CDD) - 8%
Additional Customs duty - 3%
Special Additional customs duty - 4%
Educational cess -3 %

That is a total of 28%

The Countervailing duty may or may not be charged depending on whether similar goods are produced in India.

More details at, http://www.helplinelaw.com/docs/main.php3?id=CLPR1

Be prepared to pay this amount if you are ordering from the US.

Bops

Bops,

Does it include fishing gear too. I paid about I think 13% customs duty when I bought my fishing rod from the US.

Thanks,
LF

Since fishing gear is not listed as also being manufactured in india, CDD and Special Additional customs duty will not be levied. That means 28-12 a total of 16% should have been charged.

Hi BOPS,
My brother will bring a fishing rod and reel from SINGAPORE. Will these stuff attract duty at airport. If yes please guide me bout the duty structure and will he be allowed to carry it as cabin baggage? If not what are the chance of it being damage in registered luggage.
Please guide as he is coming on this 29th, so that i can tell him in advance.
THANKS .

Hi Prakash,

Most likely he will not be charged customs if he claims that it is for personal use.

The rod will definitely break if it is not carried in a hard tube case.

I recently got a set of Shimano travel rods from UK. They were carried as registered baggage. No customs duty was charged at the airport.
If you inform the tackle dealer that the rods are to be transported by air, they will pack it appropriately. Mine were housed in a rigid cardboard tube which stood the rigors of baggage handling exceedingly well.
Fishing rods are NOT permitted to be carried as cabin baggage any more.

Any idea what the custom duty for a minn kota electric trolling motor ($350) which run off a 12 v battery would be if

a) sent from the US by courier/USPC or
b) some one brings one in on tranfer of residence..

wonder if these motors are available in india..

thanks

with the postal, custom and other depts. put together, its a matter of luck... I've noticed that if i say sporting purpose then they start sining the duty song... on the other hand if you say it is "machchi pakad ne ke liye" then they look at you as if you are daft, ask you if it is not easier to buy fish from a shop and let you go...

I've been stopped at railway stations and been told by the Railway cops that a treble is a potential weapon (talk about dumb) and its not allowed on trains, yet at the same time i've gotten in a 8 seater zodiac with a 40 HP outboard without these guys batting an eye-lid... the age old sarkari funda of "dhool mein lathi chalana" applies i think!!!

i'd say try your luck and bluff your way through!!! Down with taxation!!!   ...

Cheers,
IG
