So far iv used just line, thrown into the water, using a spare nut (from the garage) as a weight, and a hook, or if i was lucky enough to find a stick (cane or bamboo) id use that. I have used my dads rod a couple of times, but mostly done it the barbaric way.

Now im looking to buy myself some gear, although my budget is a constraint!

I plan on mainly jetty and surf fishing, and some fishing off a river dam.. nothing too big..

What would you suggest a novice with these needs?

Any help given will be really appreciated! I am relly clueless about the gear i would need.. Thanks!

On a budget the Shimano FX 9 foot rod is a good bet at Rs 1600 coupled with the Shimano Alivio 6000FA reel at Rs 3200. The bigger 10000FA comes in at Rs 3500. The FX4000 may be too small for saltwater fishing but will do for freshwater and that costs Rs 1500.

for shore and Jetty fishing you need bigger rods and reels than fresh water fishing and these cost more. In fresh water fishing you must decide weather you want to do bait or spin fishing-spin fishing will cost more than bait fishing. The choise is yours.
