For some species its possible during spawning (changes in shape, color and skin) but otherwise its impossible if you are trying to identify visually.

For all major carps, it is almost impossible to differentiate sex unless or otherwise it is spawning season. It becomes easy to identify the male by development of some tubercles on operculum and the pectoral fin and thus it becomes rough. The genital opening of male is like a slit. The female can be identified by their prominent round belly and the genital opening is bulging and convex in shape. During the spawning, if you apply slight pressure on the belly of male, near its genital opening, white milt will come out. If you repeat the same procedure on female, on the slightest pressure, bunch of eggs will come out.

This method of identification was very kindly explained to me by Mr. Gatade of R.A. hatchery of Mumbai.

Regards,

Ali.
