Off the coast from Broome in Western Australia, the charter boat skipper had an area marked on his GPS and told us that once we were on the spot, we would have perhaps a 2 minute
window of opportunity in which to catch the trevally before the boat
drifted from the area.
He had done several dives at this place and found it to hold large schools of these fish, as well as several large nurse sharks - he did not hang around for too long!
The technique to catch the trevally was very simple, we lowered our
weighted soft plastics straight down, worked the rods energetically
to give action to the plastics and within seconds of doing so we had
fish on!
A brutal fight ensued before these were brought on board. The Zman
plastics were not damaged at all, a testimony to their toughness.
There were so many types... golden trevally ,bronze trevally, silver,
bludger, tea leaf .... several whose name I have forgotten now.
All were released to fight another day.
Tackle used:
TT jig heads 5/8oz. - size5/0 hook
Zman 5" jerk bait in "Pearl" colour
Zman 5" shad in "Electric Chicken" colour
The "Pearl" seemed to elicit the most strikes but had to be worked
a bit more than the shad.
***
Big brassy trevally on board
Golden trevally
More trevallies coming on the soft plastics
The boss catches the biggest fish - more fishing trips authorised!
Soft plastics used - jigheads - and always have a tube of superglue to repair shredding/affixing the soft plastic to the jighead
Normal size plastic lure
Full stretch of the new tough lures - they are really tough!
This concludes my report on my fishing trip to Eco Beach, near Broome, Western Australia.
