Hi Viraj, I quite agree with you about JH.
There have been several videos done on the Kaveri too, but even experienced anglers keep calling the mahseer either golden / silver / blue fin rather than by their proper names when they are from different species. No info on migratory patterns, feeding habits, habitat etc.
A lot more research could have been done before undertaking such assignments. The videos are considered successful if there are a couple of big fish captured on tape, but in reality, film makers are yet to do justice to the species.

The problem is that the majority of people who watch these videos will never experience mahseer fishing themselves and are only interested in seeing big fish being caught on camera.
I work full-time for a weekly fishing magazine in the UK and know that if i wrote an article on mahseer conservation few people would read it, but if i write about the fishing i do on my trips then i always get a good response.
Most don't realise just how much in danger mahseer are from poaching/the building of dams/water abstraction/etc and sadly many don't care.
Just look at how difficult it has been to get tiger conservation projects to work.

I enjoyed watching JH but some of it was a bit exagerated, for example the place where he caught the goonch you can drive to a park next to the river, not having to trek for days as was inferred on the film.

Gary, I agree conservation would be secondary to the making of such videos, entertainment value comes first i agree. But when making such videos, it would do justice if the viewers were made aware of the various species of this fish, the waters they inhabit and some background on the fish.

Quotes by Thomas, McDonald and Skene Dhu can't be considered enough to fill the gap.

I realise that most videos on species found in Europe are made that way, and any reference to the details in question could draw more than a few yawns, but when dealing with species like goonch / mahseer /catla /rohu / mirgal / walago attu etc that are alien to European waters, it makes sense to do it the right way.

For that matter even people in India and Asia would be very interested in knowing more about these species.

Owen,
Personally would love to see something like that, would probably find it more interesting than the fishing itself, but unfortunately a lot of people aren't interested. I've found this out from experience in the past when I've written anything a bit more technical or scientific based!
I'd be happy to do anything i can to help with the conservation side of things, but hard being based in England as mahseer fishing is only popular with a very small number of people.
