Hey, guys.

This is my first post on IA, so I hope the pictures get uploaded properly.

Caught this 15 lb. Mahseer ten minutes before packing up to leave for Bangalore at Doddamakali. Even though it was a small one, I almost lost it in the rocks.
Fishing was pretty good. Missed about a twenty pounder in the rocks a few feet in front of me at another pool.

Image

I also had a few questions and I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out;

1. Do you need a license to fish at the Powai lake? And, what's the best time to go there?

2. I caught this small carp while fishing in a small lake in Chikmagalur. Used balls of wheat as bait. Is it a Common Carp or a Grass Carp?

Image

3. Being just 17, none of the gilles at any of the camps take me as a serious angler, and when I ask for chilwa, they usually say it's not available. Any suggestions on how I can get some the next time I hit the river?

Thanks in advance for your replies.
Hope the pictures upload properly![/img]

Good catches there Pranoy.

Thanks for sharing. But a piece of advice, please do introduce yourself on the intro thread so people get to know you better. Regarding POWAI, very soon you will receive updates from one Mr. Ali who is a veteran and a season angler of Powai Lake. The carp looks like a common carp.

Cheers and tight lines - DeZZ

Hi Pranoy,

As Dezz says......introduce yourself first so that you will get more info on the questions raised.
As for Chilwas.......you can catch them with a very very small hook with ragi or other bait.
Awiting your intro.

Ravi

Hope to have some interesting discussions with everyone!

Hi Pranoy, get yourself a chilwa net from one of the ghillies at camp and use it in weedy areas or shallows to catch some garra. They are the best live bait for mahseer.

Cheers

Congrats for the fish caught Pranoy. That carp is a sepraneous carp which I have caught in large numbers. This carp reminds me of my childhood. We have a lake in our viccinity which is leased after every 5 years. I have spent my entire childhood catching these carps, rohus, mirgals, catlas, grass carps and lot other varieties. These carps grow to a good size. I remember the biggest I had caught on hand line was almost 9 kgs. Anyways thnks for sharing the pics and happy fishing.

You can not fish Powai lake unless or otherwise you are a member Or guest of Member of MSAA.

Fortunately, many of IA members are also MSAA member and you may get the chance to fish with any of them.

In case, you have a specific plan to visit Mumbai, do post it and in case one of us (IA-MSAA Member) is fishing during that period, we will surely take you as a guest there.

Welcome to the forum and tight lines.

Regards,

Ali. :-)

PS; The best time would be when the fishes are on bite..

Hello Pranoy, I have seen a video of a guy catching live baits with a plastic bottle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGqw7_Sb4AA

Never tried it, so if you do, let me know if it worked :)

Thanks, everyone!
Sorry for the late reply.
@kryptoz- That looks very interesting, should definitely try it out.

Is it still raining towards Doddamakali?
When do you all think is a good time to hit the river? Itching to go back!

Ali, I was busy with the funeral of a close relative and may have been traveling due to which you were unable to reach me. Do call in advance if coming to Blore again.

Cheers
