Hi all,

Me and my friends were planning for a short trip to Nepal for a long time and the dream fulfilled when we finally boarded the train from Ghy to Siliguri on the 17th of this month. Our original plan was:
17th night: Guwahati to Siliguri
18th morning: Siliguri to the fishing spot in Nepal. Night Fishing
19th: whole day fishing
20th whole day fishing
21st:start early morning from the spot so that we reach siliguri by noon and take a train at 12.30 back to Guwahati.

But the trip turned up like this.

On 17th night we boarded the train and reached Siliguri in the morning the next day. The train reached Siliguri an hour late. Mr. Premdan came to pick us at the station. Went to the rest house offered by Mr. Foning to freshen up a little and head directly to the destination. But we took almost three hours to get out of Siliguri town to Kakarbhitta. From there it was a 6 hour journey to the fishing spot. By the time we reached the spot where a boat was supposed to take us further half an hour journey to the fishing spot, it was already 4pm in the evening. We were very excited to take that boat journey. But the boatman was nowhere to be seen. Later the boatman's wife told us that his boat engine had some problem and he had gone to Kathmandu to get spare parts. He will reach the ghat in two days. We were totally devastated. We tried to call up the boatman of the nearby ghat to take us to the spot but he was too busy ferrying his own passengers. He assured us to take us the next day early in the morning. So we decided to spend the night in the ghat. The boatman who was supposed to take us to the ghat ran a small tea shop. The wife gave us permission to sleep in the tea shop for the night. The next day the other boatman was again ferrying his own passengers and came to pick us at 12.00 noon. We didnt say anything to the boatman as he was supposed to take us back to the ghat again. Our morale was very low by the time we reached the fishing spot. That day also we couldnt fish properly as we had to organise the camp and cook the lunch as well. By 2.00 pm we were ready to fish. On the opposite bank of the river one local handliner had caught a golden mahseer. We called him to our side of the bank to see his tackles and the fish. To our surprise he was fishing for the first time in his life with mono line of approx 100 lb and a 3/0 size treble hook. No lures/spinners/or spoons. The mahseer weighed 7.3 kg. That day Mr. Ashok caught two golden mahseers too. I was the only one to carry a camera and I was fishing a bit far away from the other anglers. So I couldnt click any pics of his catch. Catch and Release was not at all practised and the two mahseers were kept for the pot. I was quite saddened by this attitude as we had a lot of pork, live chicken and vegetables to eat for atleast three days. The mahseers could have been released back to their water. So that day the count was Mr. Ashok- 2 and the rest of the gang -nil.
The next Morning Mr. Ashok caught one more golden mahseer and I hooked one. I didnt even wait to check the weight of the mahseer. I felt like it was around 2.5kg. I even forgot to carry my camera also that morning. So no pics. The local peaple were totally dumbstruck when I released that beautiful mahseer back in the water. They thought I was going near the water to clean the fish from the slimes. By 11.00 am we were ready to be picked up by that boatman. There also he came an hour late. We reached back Siliguri by 7.00 pm and went to bed by 11.00pm. On 21st we boarded the train at 12.05 pm and reached Guwahati by 7.00pm the same day.

The tackles used were:
A few rapala floating lures
Rubber shads
Acme little cleo spoons
Luhr Johnson Crocodile spoons
Blue fox spinners.
The reels were penn spinfisher 650
Penn sargus 6000
Shimano Spirex
Shimano Sedona
One Daiwa (model not known)
The rods were
St. Croix Triumph 4pc travel rod
Shimano Exage 5pc travel rod
Abu garcia Tournament II 2pc rod
Berkley Pro Select 2pc rod
Emerald Marine 2pc rod.
Lines were:
40lb mono
40 lb braids.

The total catch was:
Mr. Ashok - 3
Myself - 1
Rest of the gang - nil.

We had actually visited the place a month early.

Special thanks to Mr. Premdan for the excellent meals he had cooked for us.

I will be going to that place again soon.

Hope you like the pics.

Beautiful location Apoo.
Sorry about the luck you had. Better luck to you when you go there next.

The Himalayan Mahseer is a fish of dreams. I went on a trip for them and 4 of my 5 days were lost due to rain and subsequent muddy water.
I too am going back. Will realise the dream. You will too. The angling Gods are not always unkind! :D

Tight lines.

Looks like great fun. I've been trying to figure out which river you were on.?.. Can't seem to find Kakarbhitta on the map. My guess is you were on the Kankai Nadi, is that correct? I've fished a few of those rivers in eastern nepal with mixed results. Beautiful country. The big fellows are there sure enough, but like always, you gotta be lucky, and you gotta work for them.

Glad you had a good trip :D

It was Koshi. Kakarbhitta is near Siliguri in West Bengal.

Hi, please introduce yourself in the introduction section to get a hearty welcome from other anglers too. I forgot the name of the place. It should be Arun and definitely not Dudhkosi.
Just upstream of the Chatara ghat and the temple. From that temple the distance was somewhere near half a km ahead near the Tamar and Arun confluence. We took the small jet boat from Shrestha. We fished on the left side of the confluence (upstream). Are you from Nepal? Post something about your experiences in that location.

Hi, Sorry about the introduction but I've posted in the introduction section.Yes ofcourse I am From Nepal DHARANThe biggest i've ever caught is the 20kgs mahaseer in Arun but not with fishing gears. It was handlining.further you go up Arun youll find more rapids and i guess you'll end up loosing lures.

About dudhkosi I don't have any experiences.
Tamar does have greater potential for anglers and have good records for my hometown(Dharan) based anglers.

Some of the videos in youtube uploaded by the user from Dharan.
